About Us

Volleyball Nova Scotia (VNS) is an association managed by an extremely enthusiastic and dedicated group of volunteers who make up an eleven-member Board of Directors. In addition to the Board of Directors, there are countless volunteers province-wide who are committed to the development of volleyball. The daily activities of VNS are managed by our full-time staff in the Sport Nova Scotia offices in Halifax.

As a non-profit "Sport Governing Body", VNS is a voting member of Sport Nova Scotia, as well as a national voting member of Volleyball Canada. We are continuing our long commitment to the development of sport at both the local and national level.

Volleyball Nova Scotia is responsible for the development of one of the world's most popular sports (indoor volleyball), as well as one of the fastest growing sports in the world (beach volleyball) in our province. INDOOR volleyball has long been a major spectator sport in most parts of the world, and is now becoming more visible in North America. The international Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has more member nations than any other sport in the world. With the explosion of popularity for BEACH volleyball, television exposure (e.g., TSN, CBC, NBC, ESPN) has attracted record numbers of participants throughout the competitive and recreational levels. With this momentum, we are embarking on a number of new and exciting programs to accommodate the increasing needs of our membership.

Besides the recognizable type of volleyball that everyone played in high school, our sport has branched off in many directions. Senior Men's and Women's Volleyball, Coed Volleyball, Provincial Teams, and particularly Beach Volleyball have had significant growth over the past decade. With thousands of Nova Scotians being directly involved as players, referees, and coaches, as well as countless others in support roles such as administrators and parents, volleyball is exposed to a wide cross-section of the population. In recent studies by Statistics Canada, Volleyball was identified as one of the top five sports in Canada for participation. With such wide-spread popularity, volleyball is an appealing sport to be involved in at any age or ability.
