Volleyball Canada Program OverviewThe Mini-Volley program is a new initiative developed by Volleyball Canada to aid elementary school teachers and club coaches in introducing volleyball to young players. Volleyball has traditionally been viewed as a difficult sport to introduce to young children, but it doesn't have to be. With the simple modifications that Mini-Volley offers, teachers and coaches can easily provide their players with a fun and rewarding volleyball experience. Best of all you don't need to be a volleyball expert to get started! What is Mini-Volley? Mini-Volley is an approach for initiating people to the game of volleyball. The traditional game is adapted to the specific needs and abilities of the participants. These adaptations include varying the number of players, altering the court size, adjusting the height of the net, and using bigger and lighter balls. Different game formats such as 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, 3 vs. 3 and 4 vs. 4 are used. Various rules are also adapted to encourage longer rallies and decrease the difficulty of skill execution. The objective of these adaptations is to encourage learning, promote success, and increase the enjoyment for the participants. When the game is properly adapted for the age and abilities of the participants, they experience more success, enjoy the activity, and want to play more often! |

The Mini-Volley program is fully endorsed by Physical & Health Education Canada. The progression of Mini-Volley is the Atomic Volleyball program which focuses on volleyball skill development and game play. The Atomic Volleyball program is a great tool for teaching children the basics of the sport and getting them ready for the more complex 6 on 6 game when they are older. As a companion program to Volleyball Canada’s successful Mini-Volley program, Atomic Volleyball continues to build on the Mini-Volley concepts. This program focuses on fair play, skill development, teamwork and most of all a rewarding game-play experience. Its larger goal is to develop a passion for the sport in the younger players of the game! Atomic Volleyball can be incorporated into any physical education class, volleyball club or community program. It incorporates principles established in the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) athlete development model for Learning to Train Stage athletes. For Volleyball Nova Scotia’, the 12 & Under Volleyball program is an introductory program that teaches participants the basics of the game in a fun and active environment. 12 & Under Volleyball is an adaptation of traditional volleyball, created to make the game of volleyball fun and enjoyable for children. Adaptations, like Mini-Volley include a smaller court and lower net, fewer people on the court to increase number of contacts with the ball, a special ball that is easier on the arms, and modified rules to increase participants success rate. The focus of 12 & Under Volleyball is FUN and learning through participation. |
