2018-05-28

The best of the Nova Scotia sport community gathered at the Halifax Convention Centre for the presentation of these prestigious awards.

The esteemed sport recognition event honoured the achievements of over 200 athletes, coaches, officials, sponsors and volunteers from across the province.

The Support4Sport Award winners of the night for volleyball are:

Volleyball – Volunteer of the Year
Lee Harwood

Lee is always willing to step up and help on committees when asked and has contributed many hours to meetings and, in particular, fundraising projects. Last summer, he personally raised $13,000 to supplement the women's Canada Games Team's pre-games competition. This money funded a trip to a high-level competition where the team was able to compete against the top teams in the country in preparation for their trip to Winnipeg.

Volleyball – Official of the Year
Morgan Snow, Berwick

Morgan is a tremendously accomplished official and is often selected to referee the gold medal match at high school and club provincial championships as well as club national championships. As the Valley's Representative for the Nova Scotia Volleyball Referees Association, Morgan assigns every school and club volleyball match in the region. On top of this, Morgan assigns all of Volleyball Nova Scotia's Super Series competitions as well as Club Provincial Championships.

Volleyball – Team of the Year
Men's Beach Volleyball Canada Games Team

Kobe Shannon and Christian Fricke brought home a silver medal while representing Nova Scotia at the 2017 Canada Summer Games. The duo went 3-1 in round and their only loss was to B.C. in a three-set battle which went into extra points. In the playoffs, Shannon and Fricke defeated the powerhouse Ontario team to set up a rematch against B.C. Unfortunately, they lost another three-set heartbreaker, but the silver medal marked the highest finish yet for Nova Scotia.

Volleyball – Coach of the Year
Andrew Costa, Bedford

Andrew Costa represented Nova Scotia at the 2017 Canada Games as the coach of the men's beach volleyball team. Andrew coached the team for two years and the team demonstrated steady progress leading up to the Canada Games tournament. The team ended up winning the silver medal, earning Nova Scotia its best Canada Games finish yet in the sport.

Volleyball – Female Athlete of the Year
Julie Moore, Halifax

Julie Moore had an impressive year as she helped lead her Tigers U18 team to an undefeated season. She led them to the provincial championship where her team was undefeated and did not lose a set as she was named MVP. Then her all-star performance at nationals led the team to a bronze medal in the 18U Tier 1 Division 1, a first for Nova Scotia. She also played at the Canada Games where she helped Nova Scotia finish fifth.

Volleyball – Male Athlete of the Year
Kobe Shannon, Halifax

Kobe was instrumental in helping Nova Scotia bring home a silver medal at the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Kobe led the tournament in blocks per set with 1.63/set and hit an impressive .284 attack percentage over the course of four round-robin matches and three playoff matches. The silver medal was Nova Scotia's highest finish yet at Canada Games. Kobe was a coach's dream athlete and showed dedication, determination, and work ethic.

Volleyball – Sponsor of the Year
Mikasa

Mikasa has been a sponsor of Volleyball Nova Scotia for the last decade. They have provided VNS with the best volleyballs in the world for our provincial team training and club competitions. Each year, Mikasa contributes more than $10,000 in equipment and merchandise.
