Canada Games is a national multi-sport and cultural event being held August 2-17, 2013 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Since 1967, the Canada Games has evolved to become the pinnacle of national competition for Canadian athletes and includes divisions for persons with disabilities and an arts component called the National Artist Program. Volleyball players represent Nova Scotia in 2 sports, beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. |

Canada Games Indoor Selection Policy
- 1. Objectives
1.1 To select athletes that will form teams to achieve the best possible results in Canada Games.
1.2 To employ an open and fair selection process that gives all athletes a chance to challenge for membership on the Canada Games teams.
- 2. Eligibility
2.1 To be eligible for selection, an athlete must be resident in Nova Scotia for 6 months immediately prior to the commencement of Canada Games.
2.2 To be eligible for selection, an athlete cannot have taken part in Canada Games selection in any other province.
2.3 Age Eligibility
2.3.1 For the 2013 Canada Games, male athletes must be born in 1992 or later to be eligible.
2.3.2 For the 2013 Canada Games, female athletes must be born in 1993 or later to be eligible.
2.3.3 An athlete must not be ineligible to compete as a result of a sanction issued by Volleyball Nova Scotia.
- 3. Selection Framework
Volleyball is a team sport. Canada Games volleyball teams are limited to twelve athletes. While an athlete can do a great deal to develop in an individual environment, ultimately that athlete has to be able to realize their potential and perform within a team. Acknowledgment is made that in selection for a team sport, combinations of athletes, the balance of a squad and the ability of athletes to play in more than one position are also considered alongside individual skill level.
- 4. Talent Identification
Open try outs will be held for all eligible athletes.
Notwithstanding the above, Canada Games Coaching staff, VNS Elite Indoor Committee members (Technical Director) or other VNS Board members may identify athletes and invite them to attend try outs.
- 5. Selection Process
5.1 The relevant try out and selection dates will be published in advance and available to athletes on the VNS website and shall be emailed to all clubs within Nova Scotia and eligible post provincial elite athletes no less than one month before the try out date.
5.2 The selection criteria for Canada Games volleyball athletes are attached at Appendix A and will be available to athletes on the VNS website no less than one month before the try out date.
5.3 Athlete selections will be made by the Canada Games Head Coach in consultation with VNS’ Canada Games Selection Committee. VNS’ Canada Games Selection Committee shall consist of the Elite Chair and two members to be selected by the Elite Chair and Canada Games Head Coach.
5.4 Athletes will be notified of their selection or non-selection as soon as possible with an agreed method of communication.
5.5 The Canada Games Head Coach will be available to discuss the selection results with affected athletes. All discussions will take place with the Canada Games Head Coach and either another member of the coaching staff or another member of the Canada Games Selection Committee.
Appendix A
Selection Criteria
Evaluation of athletes shall include assessment of the following skills:
- Attacking Efficiency
- Blocking Efficiency
- Digging Efficiency
- Setting Efficiency
- Serving Efficiency
- Passing Efficiency-serve
- Passing Efficiency-free ball/down ball
Other considerations shall be factored into the selection process and shall include:
- Physical testing: height, standing reach, spike touch, block touch, speed, strength
- Teamwork: the willingness to accept a role that leads to team success.
- Positive Attitude: exhibiting enthusiasm and support of teammates.
- Versatility: exhibiting a balance between offensive and defensive skills as well as the ability to play multiple positions with a variety of teammates.
- Maturity: exhibiting an ability to adjust to various situations, dealing with adversity and reacting appropriately.
- Leadership: exhibiting the qualities of confidence, commitment to goals and mutual respect between that athlete and others and guidance
- Coaching Direction: exhibiting the ability to process and incorporate input from the coaching staff.
- Work Ethic: displays a strong work ethic on and off the court
- Commitment: exhibits a high level of commitment to the team and to self improvement
- Competitiveness: displays a fierce level of competitiveness on and off the court.
